Amtrak News Release: Amtrak Ridership Rolls Up Best-Ever Records

October 13, 2011 WASHINGTON DC - Amtrak carried nearly 30.2 million passengers in Fiscal Year 2011 ending September 30, marking the highest ridership total since the National Railroad Passenger Corporation started operations in 1971 and the eighth ridership record during the last nine years. Ridership versus the prior year is up by more than five percent - and ticket revenue is up by more than eight percent -- despite significant weather related disruptions in the Northeast, Central and Western U.S. 

Pennsylvania’s Keystone Rail Corridor Receives $40 Million from USDOT

On September 30, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood awarded a $40 million grant to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to eliminate delays in and out of Harrisburg on Amtrak’s Keystone Corridor. The project consists of replacing aging track and signals with modern technologies. The Department of Transportation had previously funded $23 million to the Keystone Corridor to improve safety and allow future train speeds to increase from 110 mph to 125 mph.

September 9, 2011 - The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation & Housing yesterday voted to slash Amtrak’s operating grant 60% -- from $563 million this year and last, to $227 million. Capital grants (including debt service) would drop from $924 million to $889 milllion.
