The OneRail Coalition commends Senators John D. Rockefeller and Frank Lautenberg for introducing the Federal Surface Transportation Policy and Planning Act to establish a clear mission for our national surface transportation policies and programs.

“OneRail agrees that a clear sense of national purpose with clear goals and meaningful accountability for meeting them are essential if we are going to have a transportation system that is capable of delivering the services to support Americaʼs economy in the 21st Century,” said Anne Canby, President of the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership and founding member of OneRail. “Establishing a clear national policy sets the stage to move away from todayʼs programmatic fragmentation to an outcome driven, performance based set of programs in which each mode – from sidewalks to intercity passenger and freight rail lines – plays a key role in providing access to education, healthcare, jobs, shopping and entertainment, domestic and international markets, distribution centers, and manufacturing facilities. Rail in all its forms can help meet our national mobility and other performance goals.”

The OneRail Coalition brings passenger and freight rail stakeholders together for the first time. Members include American Public Transportation Association, Amtrak, American Short Line & Regional Railroad Association, Association of American Railroads, Building Americaʼs Future, National Association of Railroad Passengers, National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association, Natural Resources Defense Council, Railway Supply Institute, States for Passenger Rail Coalition, and Surface Transportation Policy Partnership. OneRail believes public policies that support both freight and passenger rail objectives are needed to maximize transportation options that enhance mobility, achieve energy efficiency, address climate change, boost economic growth and improve quality of life for all Americans.
